Feng Shui Buzzwords - A
Annual star
The central number within the Lo Shu Square changes number each year as the numbers 1 - 9 move to different locations. The centre number within the Lo Shu square is known as the annual star.
Annual stars / Visiting stars
Each number/star in the Lo Shu Square visits a different location each year.
Armchair
Known in Form School as the perfect siting for a home with Mountain support at the sides and from behind, like a good armchair offering support and protection.
Astrology (Western)
A faith based system of divination which translates from Greek as star (astro) and science/vocabulary (logia). This system uses the sun, moon and planets to create horoscopes.
Auspicious
Feng Shui consultants will use this word to describe something beneficial or favourable.
Feng Shui Buzzwords - B
Bagua / Ba Gua / Pa Kua
Ba meaning eight and gua mean areas. Used in Compass School, this is an octagon or circle divided into 8 equal areas, outside of one central area. Each area relates to a cardinal sector, a Chinese Trigram and a Lo Shu number.
Bai Hu / White Tiger / Tiger
Known in Form School as the area to the left hand side when looking at a property. The mountains, landscape and built structures that are on this side.
Ba Zhai / Ba Zhai Pai / 8 House Feng Shui / 8 Mansions / East/West School
A Feng Shui system to determine 4 favourable and 4 unfavourable directions for each person - depending on their Kua number (determined by the year of birth and gender).
Ba Zi / 4 Pillars / 4 Pillars of Destiny
A faith based system of Chinese Astrology using 8 characters for analysis. 4 heavenly stems and 4 earthly branches.
Black Hat Sect / Black Sect Tantric Buddhism
A modern American religion founded in Berkeley, California by Thomas Lin Yun in 1986. Known as an unorthodox following of Tibetan Tantric Buddhism and Tibetan Bon. This sect combines religion, philosophy, folk law and ancient culture stemming from Confucianism and Taoism with modern ideas.
Black Hat Feng Shui / BTB Feng Shui / Black Sect Tantric Buddhist Feng Shui / 3 Gate Chi
This style of Feng Shui comes from the modern 'Black Hat Sect' religion mentioned above. A popular practice that was devised’ in America in the 1980s. A simplified method of Feng Shui that uses the door of a room or building as a central point to lay the Late Heaven Bagua grid on. This is not a recognised system of Feng Shui within China.
Black Tortoise / Mountain / Black Turtle
In Form School Feng Shui, this symbolises the mountains, hills or structure that support and protect your rear. Best positioned in the north to give you ample protection from Northerly winds. Used to describe the rear or a property / plot.
Book of Changes / I Ching / Yi Jîng
The 'Book of Changes' is an ancient Chinese oracle which centres around the 8 Trigrams and their representations. These combine to form 64 hexagrams, each with a specific meaning, symbol, association, state and process. The book of scriptures was seen as a major part of Chinese philosophy in both Confucianism and Taoism.
Feng Shui Buzzwords - C
Cardinal / Cardinal points
The 4 main compass directions: North, South, East and West.
Celestial Animals / Four Emblems
In Form School Feng Shui, this symbolises the four mythical animsals: Black Turtel, White Tiger, Red Phoenix and Azure Dragon. Together they represent the ‘armchair’ formation in the landscape.
Chi / Ch’i / Qi / Ki / Prana / Energy
Translates as breath. A concept that is intangible and cannot be proved. In China many thousands of years ago, a clear understanding of space weather, solar radiation and geomagnetic fields were not held. Chi was the name given to this concept, it was something the Chinese were able to identify and then manipulate.
Chen / Ch’en / Zhen / Dragon / Azure Dragon / Green Dragon
The Dragon from the Chinese Animals. Also belonging to the 12 Earthly branches and the 24 Mountains.
Chien / Qian
The North West Trigram, Father, Number 6 in the Lo Shu Sqaure and the Metal Element.
Chinese Almanac / Tung T’su
A book/diary published annually to advise good and bad days for different activites.
Chinese Calendar
A calendar with the same content as the Chinese Almanac / Tung T’su.
Chinese New Year
In the Lunar calendar system, this is the first day of the first month.
Chou / Ch’ou
The Ox from the Chinese Animals. Also beloning to the 12 Earthly branches and the 24 Mountains.
