Eco Feng Shui?!??!?!
To clear things up. Eco Feng Shui - is it really the greener option?
This fact sheet looks at how Feng Shui relates to ecology and the environment.
How eco is Feng Shui?
POOR!
♦ If you import Feng Shui ornaments, lucky charms and goods from overseas.
♦ If you buy into Feng Shui consumerism.
WHY?
♦ The materials are probably from unsustainable sources e.g. a natural forest was cut down to make room for a bamboo plantation, destroying local eco systems and landscape.
♦ The products are most likely to be made in factories that have poor ethical standards for the employees.
♦ Large amounts of packaging (most likely plastic or non renewable materials) are used for protection during shipping.
♦ Transportation and shipping to overseas location uses a large amount of non renewable fuel resources e.g. fossil fuels. This depletes these resources and also creates high levels of carbon emissions – both terrible for the environment.
♦ At the distributors, the products are then repackaged (most likely plastic or non renewable materials).
♦ More shipping is needed to deliver these goods to the retailers, see above.
♦ More transport is needed for the customer to take each singular item home, see above.
♦ At home, packaging is thrown away, ending up in landfill sites causing more air, land and water pollution.
♦ At home the item itself was originally made with synthetic materials and finished with chemical substances, which release toxins into the air for you to breathe in over the product life time.
♦ PHEW!
How energy efficient is Feng Shui?
POOR!
♦ If you use gadgets and features that use electricity 24 hours a day.
WHY?
♦ Electricity is energy, and that has to be generated from somewhere.
♦ The majority of energy is generated by using non renewable fossil fuels that use up our nautral resources and create large amounts of toxic emissions.
♦ The more electronic gizmos you have, the more electricity you are using and the more you are a cause of damage to the nautral eneivonemnt.
♦ Also bear in mind the more electricity you use at home, the higher your utlitey bills are. So spend less and help the environment by cutting your electricitiy usage at home.
♦ This means limit the amount or at least be aware of the gadgets you have. From a Feng Shui perspective this is water features, pumped aquariums, electromagnetic field (EMF) gadgets, lighting etc.
What does the environment have to do with Feng Shui?
EVERYTHING!
WHY?
♦ In ancient times when Feng Shui was created by the Taoists, the industrial or man-made world didn’t exist. Quite simply our ancestors lived on the land in harmony with the Elements and the natural eco systems. Now in modern times awareness of carbon emissions, climate change and the destruction of our natural environment is rising. Every one of us MUST change our thinking, actions and habits so that the planet is not completely destroyed by our own hand, including the life of our future generations. This means that the environment has everything to do with Feng Shui. You cannot live in harmony on the land with Feng Shui as your ONLY tool or code of living. You have to take a more practical responsibility for your own environmental footprint too. Adapt and survive.
Is Feng Shui just another eco friendly gimic?
NO!
WHY?
♦ Because Feng Shui on its own is not ecological. It’s the practice of living in harmony with the land.
♦ Living in harmony on the land relates to vernacular building and the built landscape, infrastructure, sustainable natural landscapes, plot and building orientation. On a large scale; communities, on a smaller scale; your property.
♦ That doesn’t automatically make it eco friendly, sustainable, green, environmentally friendly or Fair Trade.
♦ It’s the responsibility of the Feng Shui consultant to ensure they carry the ecological message into their work.
Is Feng Shui a solution for climate change?
NO!
WHY?
♦ The truth is there is not a single or combined solution for climate change.
♦ There are steps we can take to lessen the damage for future generations.
♦ Feng Shui is about making a choice to live in harmony with the land.
♦ Ecology is about making informed choices for how you live your life to create as little of an environmental footprint as possible.
♦ The two together are a great combination.
Is a greener lifestyle important?
